Basketball returned to Royston Leisure Centre this past week. Teams from Ware, Cambridge and Harlow joined hosts Corvus Cornix, for the start of the u17 Junior Central Venue League.

Corvus, last year’s run away winners, looked to start the season with a flourish but faltered in the first game against a strong looking Cambridge Cats team. A slow first half saw Corvus struggle to sore with Eddie Twyman, Rob Hall and Ryan Judge scoring a solitary basket each. The game was lost in the third quarter with Cats scoring 10 unanswered points. Some more good work inside the key from Twyman reduced the deficit in the 4th but still saw Corvus lose their first game in competition since late 2011, with Cats winning 25-12.

In the second game of the day, a close fought game saw Russell Hoops from Ware just edge out Harlow Hawks in a high scoring game 35-28. This game took it out of a jaded looking Hawks team who had to play in the 3rd game and struggled against a confident Cats team, losing 41-8.

Corvus regrouped over their break and coach Grant Connell looked to work his tactical magic against a buoyed Hoops side. It worked well as Twyman continued to find the basket from powerful drives in the first half and was backed up with scores from Ryan Judge, Zac Conley and a fantastic 3 point shot from distance from Charlie Stimson giving Corvus a 10 point lead to take into the second half. Hoops regrouped and started to find their shooting from the perimeter, but Corvus responded with points from Hall, Twyman, Judge and another 3 pointer, this time from Leah Parcell keeping them 8 points head going into the last quarter. Points continued to be traded back and fourth making this the game of the day with 5, 3 pointers being registered. Twyman, Judge, Conley, Parcell completed the scoring for Corvus and meant they bounced back from the earlier defeat and kick start their defence of the championship winning 39-25.

Corvus Juniors finish Junior Central Venue league with impressive victory

Royston Basketball Club Corvus Cornix played host to the North Herts Knights on Sunday 19th January in the final round of the U.17 Junior Central Venue competition that is hosted once a month at the Royston Leisure Centre.

Corvus juniors have been growing from strength to strength as the season has progressed and after a strong win against the North Herts Knights in February, the tone was set for a good game to finish the season.

The first quarter was slow to get going with Corvus taking a three point lead from baskets from Sam Robinson, Captain Matt Davis, Adam Breeze, Harry Murdock and superb fast breaking from the impressive Eleanor Bishop.

During the second quarter, baskets were traded between Knights and Corvus with Guy Curtis and Bishop keeping Corvus’ lead, until the last minute where Davies, Murdock and Joe Graves hit 3 unanswered baskets to extend the lead at half time to 7 points.

Passages of possession were traded at the start of the third quarter with further points from strong centre Robinson and Murdock until a strong finish with baskets from Davis, Curtis, Will Hart and further fast breaks from Bishop saw Corvus into the final part of the game with an 11 point lead.

The Corvus players held firm with some pressure from the Knights but strong a defence, turned into quick attacks, with points from Bishop, Breeze, Curtis and Davis saw Corvus win by 10 points 59-49 and rue their slow start to the season. Despite beating Knights for the past 3 games, Knights had already won enough earlier in the season to take the championship on this occasion, but Corvus will feel confident going into next seasons competition.

Corvus Juniors continue to improve with strong performances

Royston Basketball Club Corvus Cornix played host to the North Herts Knights and Cambridge Cats on Sunday 19th January in the U.17 Junior Central Venue competition that is hosted once a month at the Royston Leisure Centre.

The first game saw was a very tightly contested affair and the best game of the afternoon. Corvus who have been improving with each competition defended very well in the first half to keep within 2 points of their Baldock rivals. Baskets from Jamie Stimson, Adam Breeze, Sam Robinson, Harry Murdock and a three pointer from Captain Matt Davis saw Corvus trail 13-11 at half time. Second half points from Guy Curtis, Eleanor Bishop and further points from Robinson and Davis saw the scores tied with a minute to go only for last minute heartbreak as the North Herts Knights continued their dominance of the competition winning 24-20.

The second game of the afternoon was not as close and the North Herts Knights continued their winning record for the season with a solid display beating the Cambridge Cats. The end of the third quarter saw Cats get back within three points only to see the Knights run away in the final quarter winning 37-24.

The final game of the competition gave both Corvus and Cats the chance to atone for their earlier defeats. Corvus started with confidence carrying on from their earlier good performance and took a 3 point lead into the second period with points from Curtis, Sam Copeland and Breeze. Further first half points followed with rapid fast breaking basketball from Davis, Oliver Shepherd and Robinson gave Corvus a 14 point lead with the scores 21-7 at half time. Solid defending from Corvus saw Cats only add another 7 points in the second half. The tired cats players struggled to cope with the impressive offence of Corvus with another 28 points being scored from Stimson, Curtis, Robinson, Davis and Shepherd. Corvus hope to take this form onto the next set of matches on 26th February.

Corvus Juniors in close defeats in double header against Knights

Royston Basketball Club Corvus Cornix played host to the North Herts Knights in a double header for the U.17 Junior Central Venue competition that is hosted once a month at the Royston Leisure Centre.

The first game started slowly with both teams showing signs of nerves meaning at the end of the first quarter only 2 points had been scored between them. A number of mistakes made for a low scoring game, although the Corvus youngsters grew with confidence throughout being narrowly beaten by 31 points to 26.

The second of the two games gave Corvus the opportunity to redeem themselves and despite going in after the first quarter 10 points down they began to show signs of the work they have been putting in during training. Some good defensive rebounding from Sam Robinson and a number of scores on offence from Joe Graves started to close the gap. A great defensive steal from Leah Parcell lead to a fast break and a shift in momentum towards Corvus. Captain, Matt Davis and Eleanor Bishop were able to work together to finish a number of fast attacking moves and Adam Breeze continued to shoot well from outside. However, Corvus were ultimately punished by a lack of offensive rebounds and intensity on defence losing by a close margin of 40-44.

Coach, Grant Connell said ‘We have lost both of these games but the great thing about this competition is that it gives us the opportunity to identify the things we need to improve on in order to be the best we can be as individuals and as a team.’

Matt Davis (C) (15), Eleanor Bishop (12), Joe Graves (12), Adam Breeze (8), Sam Robinson (6), Harry Murdoch (5), George Sames (4), Leah Parcell (2), Will Hart (2), Jamie Stimson.

Match report:

Corvus Juniors hearts broken in final quarter.

Royston Basketball Club Corvus Cornix played host to the North Herts Knights for the U.17 Junior Central Venue competition that is hosted once a month at the Royston Leisure Centre.

Corvus were out of the blocks at a blistering pace in the first quarter racing into a 13 point lead and restricting Knights to only one basket, with Eleanor Bishop and Guy Curtis scoring the majority of the points.

The second quarter saw a closer affair with Knights outscoring Corvus 12 points to 10 leaving the half time score at 25-14 to Corvus with Ben Batchelor and Sam Robinson getting points on the board. Another close quarter in the third saw Corvus take a 12 point lead into the final quarter mainly thanks to a great three pointer from distance from Leah Parcell as well as points from Oliver Shepherd and captain Matt Davis.

Nerves may have got the better of the young Corvus side in the final quarter with the team failing to score in the first 7 minutes. This therefore allowed a great comeback from Knights bringing the game level with 4 minutes to play. Knights completed the comeback scoring a vital basket in the last minute of the game putting them ahead for the first time and Corvus could not take the game into overtime losing an entertaining game 38-37.

Team Corvus: Eleanor Bishop 7 points, Leah Parcell 3 points, Matt Davis 4 points (C), Guy Curtis 7 points, Adam Breeze, Joe Graves, George Sames, Sam Robinson 12 points, Harry Murdoch, Ben Batchelor 2 points, Oliver Shepherd 2 points.

Corvus Take it to the Big Cats

Junior Central Venue Basketball U.17 League @ Royston LC

Sunday, November 21st 2010

Corvus Cornix Basketball Club played host to Cambridge Cats and Herts Leopards U.17 basketball teams as quality Junior basketball came to town.

The first match of the triangular ‘meet’ saw Corvus entertain Cambridge Cats and in a tight first half the Royston team edged it at 12 – 10 with some impressive teamplay. Going into the final quarter it was all square with everything to play for. Unfortunately it was the Cats who stayed calmest under pressure and eventually prevailed 23 – 16.

The second match was the battle of the ‘Big Cats’ as Cambridge took on Herts Leopards (both teams using players with national league experience). Tired from their exertions against Corvus, Cambridge struggled against the fresh and powerful Leopards who eventually triumphed 27 – 14 with a very impressive team offence.

The final match of the afternoon pitted Leopards against a determined Corvus. The latter started superbly and scored some excellent team baskets to lead

7 – 4 before the Leopards clawed back to 7 – 6 at the interval. In the second period Corvus increased their defensive intensity and the turnovers were converted to lead 13 – 10 at the break.

The third quarter signalled Leopards surge but they still trailled19 -14 as the period ended. The final quarter saw Leopards full court press and Corvus struggled at first to deal with this pressure. Coach Connell used his vast experience with a crucial time-out and Corvus were transformed to lead 21- 16. Leopards then rallied to close to 23 – 22 and then edged ahead

26 – 23 with two minutes 35 seconds left.

Corvus bounced back once more with three crucial scores to lead 29 – 26 with fifteen seconds left on the clock. Leopards response was to go for the three pointer that would take the match to overtime. With good movement they hit the pressure shot on the buzzer only for it to be ruled a two-pointer by the lead referee, leaving Corvus one point victors and “a thrilling end to a great afternoon of junior basketball.” (Rich Pallant)

“It was fantastic to see so many home grown players playing for Corvus and all the clubs producing such good young talent” (Terry Graves, Senior Coach)

Big Cats Come to Royston

Junior Central Venue Basketball U.17 League @ Royston LC

Sunday, December 12th 2010

Corvus Cornix Basketball Club played host to Cambridge Cats and Herts Leopards U.17 basketball teams as quality Junior basketball came to town for tournament number two.

The first match of the triangular ‘meet’ saw Corvus entertain Herts Leopards who were looking to avenge their one point defeat in November. In another tight first half the Royston team edged it at 12 – 10 with some impressive teamplay. Going into the final quarter it was all square with everything to play for. Unfortunately it was Leopards who stayed calmest under pressure as they pulled away to a flattering 32 – 18 win.

The second match was the battle of the ‘Big Cats’ as Cambridge took on Herts Leopards (both teams using players with national league experience). Leopards were looking for back-to-back victories and in tight first period, edged it 10 – 8. In the next two quarters their greater experience told and they entered the final period 29 – 18 up. To their credit the Cats team rallied and closed the gap only for Leopards to move away and record their second win of the day 41 – 26.

The final match of the afternoon pitted the tired Cambridge Cats against a determined Corvus. The former started superbly and scored some excellent team baskets to lead

8 – 6  before Corvus clawed back to 12 - 8 at the interval. In the second period Corvus increased their defensive intensity and the turnovers were converted to lead 22 - 10 at the break. Cats then rallied to close to 22 – 16 but this spurred Corvus to new heights and they saw out a comfortable victory 28 – 16.

“Another enjoyable afternoon of basketball with all three clubs showcasing their young talent and entertaining the appreciative audience” (Terry Graves, Senior Coach)
